Washer and squeegee - let’s choose the size

Squeegees differ not only in width but also in the material which they are made of. You can choose a squeegee with a metal handle or a plastic one with a non-slip coating. The width of the washer determines the width of the window and the cleaning technique. With a smaller size, you need to make more movements on the window. Larger sizes have less pressure at the ends and can be less manageable. They are also harder to carry, especially if they absorb a lot of water from the bucket.

If you choose a wider squeegee, such as a 45 cm one for cleaning a 60 cm wide window, it will take two applications, but a large part of the rubber will wipe the already dry part of the window. Alternate friction on the wet and dry surface will make the squeegee not work properly. To clean a 60 cm wide window you can choose a washer and squeegee of the same size if you are confident that you will press it hard enough across all the width.

And what happens if you choose a washer and squeegee 25 cm wide to wash a window 60 cm wide? Washing an area of this width will require three applications, which will significantly increase the number of movements if you need to clean more windows. This means that washing will require more energy from you and will increase the working time.

When cleaning windows, it is important to minimize the number of movements. The “up and down” technique means that after wiping the window with the washer, water is pulled from the window by running the squeegee along the window. For example: having to wash a window 61 cm wide, the optimal size of the washer and squeegee is 35 cm. When pulling water from the window, it is important to make an up-and-down motion in two adjacent strips that slightly overlap. This will ensure that you do not leave even the smallest strip of moisture on the glass. With such a window width, it is optimal if the washer and squeegee are a little wider than half the window width.

The second method used for window cleaning is the so-called S technique. It involves making movements that resemble drawing the letter S on the glass. It requires more room for movements compared to the “up and down” method. In this case, the width of the squeegee should be slightly more than 1/3 of the width of the window. This allows you to freely maneuver it on the glass. A shorter squeegee channel will be more convenient especially for those who are just learning how to clean the glass with the “S” technique. You will make more movements, but with a shorter squeegee it will be easier for you to operate with your hand and arm. The “S” method allows you to wash the window quickly, and a squeegee that is too wide will slow down your work if you do not have much experience. When learning the technique with a long squeegee channel, more streaks will be created.

To sum up: if you wash windows at home, the best choice will be a washer and squeegee with a width of 35 or 45 cm. To clean windows, mirrors or tiles you will need a squeegee with a standard handle. However, when you need to reach higher glass, think about a pole that will allow you to access these surfaces.
